News of Norway

Rosseland captures the spirit of Norway

He grew up in a special artists' community created around Edvard Munch's atelier at Ekely in Oslo.  His father was a self taught Oslo painter, printmaker and sculptor, so the family had moved to the community from Bergen when he was a young boy.

Jarle Rosseland did not plan on becoming an artist-it just happened.  "I created prints in my spare time and after I got my high school diploma, I made my debut at the Fall Exhibit (Høstutstillingen)," Rosseland said.  The Fall Exhibit is a yearly exhibit in Oslo featuring Norwegian amateur and professional artists.  The following year, he held his first solo exhibit and ever since he has been a full time artist.

From his high school days, Rosseland has one year of experience in the banking business, if adding up odd jobs during school holidays.  After graduation, he headed to Connecticut and the Silvermine Guild of Artists to experiment and learn.  "Dad said, "'get your diploma and travel abroad,' and that's what I did," Rosseland said.

Today, Rosseland is most known for his striking linocuts, not just in Norway but internationally.  Linocut is a process in which an image is cut with a gouge in relief on a linoleum block.  Relief is the method of printing where ink is rolled onto the surface of the plate leaving lines and textures inkless.

Rosseland has held over 200 exhibits in countries ranging from Norway to Thailand, Canada to Japan, and a number of U.S cities like Dallas, San Francisco, New York and Minneapolis to mention a few.  "One year I had 300 travel days," Rosseland said.

"VARG"
Among his work are seven graphic collections with motifs from Nordic nature and culture.  The first was comprised of 25 prints accompanying Henrik Ibsen's "Per Gynt" (1974).  Then "Sigedalserien" followed with 9 smaller prints (1975), then "Viking suiten" with 10 prints (1982), "Nordkalotten" with 8 prints (1982/83), "Vinland suiten" with 24 prints illustrating the Vikings' landing in America (1984/85), 18 prints of "Norske Kystlinjer" (1986), and a series comprised of 12 motifs around the months of the year for Conoco (1988).

Commissioned by Saga Petroleum, the artist has developed 18 graphic prints inspired by Saga poet Snorri Sturlason called the "Snorre Suite." This exhibit will be featured at Union Station as part of the Norwegian Christmas at Union Station in December.

All of these collections have motifs and themes from Norway and Norwegian history.  Rosseland said that his choice of theme has been part of a search for what's truly Norwegian.  "I made Peer Gynt way back in order to make something that was Norwegian," Rosseland said.  He added that it was his publicist in New York who had told him, "you have to try to underscore the Norwegian."

When working with a historical theme, Rosseland first analyzes the material in search of a story, trying to identify the common denominator.  "Then I try to vision what pictures can become the central ones and then create from there," he explained.

His primary source of inspiration is Norway, of course.  Rosseland has made few motifs from other countries.  "Some people say that when they see my pictures that this is more or less how they remember Norway when they for example were in Norway 20 or 30 years ago," he said.  "It becomes-what should one call it-a simplification and easily recognizable.

Rosseland describes his choices of color as powerful, pure Nordic colors in red, yellow and blue.

Some of Rosseland's motifs from his linocuts have also made it onto a bigger format, tapestries.  This art form was something he picked up while studying in Paris in 1981-82.  "A colleague there knew a colleague.  That's how it goes, right?  And that's how I started with smaller tapestries and then little by little there have been more and more," he said.

According to Rosseland, tapestries are a way to get his pictures enlarged.  "In the art form I work with, getting it onto textiles gives a great effect," he added.

In addition to linocuts and tapestries, Rosseland has also illustrated posters, postcards, calendars, and books.  He has designed china and crystal for Rosenthal and Rogaska Slatina.  He is a multifaceted man.

How much time he spends on his projects each day varies, but we have never had a vacation, he said.  By we, Rosseland means to include his wife, Signe Rosseland.  She guides her husband's exhibition schedule, does all the office work, handles connections and the list goes on.  Rosseland's many projects have become a full time lifestyle for his whole family.

Rosseland is currently working on a sculpture of a Viking grave called "Vinland," which will be become part of the permanent sculpture garden planned outside Chicago in Schaumburg, Illinois.  When finished, the planned international sculpture park will, become the largest in the world, according to Rosseland.

ROSSELAND LUTHERAN CHURCH
.........McKenzie, North Dakota, USA

History of Rosseland Lutheran Church
......
- in homes, school houses, community hall and then in a church.

When the early settlers began coming into this area in early 1900's, many of them were of Lutheran faith and not before long wanted Christian worship. About 1908 the Rev. A. Johansen of Alexander saw the need and began holding services in the community. Following him, the Rev. M.L. Holy, also from Alexande, came to hold services occasionally. As a result of these gatherings, Rosseland Lutheran Congregation was finally organiced by Pastor Holey on Sunday, June 5 1911, at A. H. Nelson home. At this service Nora Helene, daughter of Anton and Johanna Nelson, was baptized. On August 6 of the same year Helmer and Mable Helgerson were baptized.

NEW PARISH AND NEW PASTOR.
Pastor Holey soon found he was unable to care for all the new congregations in McKenzie County, so Rosseland was invited to join with Trinity, Highland and Vang congregations of Alexander to form a new parish and call a new pastor.

On Saturday, February 12 1914, a call committee met at Alexander with Otto Wold as chairman and A. H. Nelson as secretary. A call was sent to the Rev. A. J. Berge. It was also decided to pay the pastor $ 700 a year, plus free housing and three offering a year.

THE ROSSELAND LADIES' AID.
The Rosseland Ladies' Aid was organized in 1914.
Since Rosseland congregation has always been linked with Rosseland Ladies' Aid, it is hard to write the history of one without mentioning the other.

PASTORS 1914 - 1948 .
The Rev. T. Haakenstad next served the congregation, coming to the Aleksander parish on August 3 1914, and remaining until May 1918. He was followed by Rev. O. R. Svore, who served Rosseland congregation faithfully for twenty-two years. After he resigned in 1939, Rev. Karsten Baalson served for about a year until Pastor A. L. Edmunds accepted the call in 1941. In 1944 he resigned and another newly ordinated pastor came to serve the parish, the Rev. Owen Doely. During this time a church building fund was started by the congregation for the first time, and hopes were high. After he resigned in 1947, Rev R. Williams accepted a call to be the pastor of the Alexander Parish.

DISBANDMENT - REAKTIVATION.
With money still being scarce, and some families moving out, Rosseland congregation decided in 1948 to disband. But the report of disbandment was never sent, so the congregation was never officially disbanded. However, the ladies' aid asked permission to continue…

By 1951 there were so many children in the community with no Sunday School that the ladies' aid decided to sponsor a Vacation Bible School … to be held in the Indian Hill School. The response was very god.

A meeting to reactivate the Rosseland congregation was held on November 19, 1951. One of the direct results of the congregation becoming active once more, was the baptisms on Sunday, June 6 1954, of fifteen children, ranging from two months in age up to 17 years.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1958.
The need of a church building became more and more evident, so members began looking for some vacant building which could be purchased, moved and made into a worshipful sanctuary. After many meetings and discussions, the congregation decided to purchase the Methodist Church at Rawson. A plot of land in the corner of the northwest quarter of section twenty two of Wilbur Township was donated to the congregation by Mr. G. M. Fossum. The ground-breaking service for the new church was held on Sunday afternoon April 22, 1956. The church was moved and placed on the basement foundation on May 31 of that same year. Here it was enlarged and remodelled by members of the congregation, with Ronald Hagen of Williston directing the work of the volunteer labor. The service of dedication was held Sunday, October 19, 1958.

" This past year, with the selling of the Lewis and Clark Irrigation Project to the United States Government, many families have to move out of this area. Yet it is with grateful hearts that we gather on this day of dedication to give thanks to our Almighty God for the realization of a dream come true. However, let us never forget there is still much work to be done: To the building as such, but most important of all - the souls that need to be saved and sanctified through the Word. May God continue to shower His blessing upon Rosseland congregation !"

VIKING SCULPTURE TO COMMEMORATE 1,000- YEARS ANNIVERSARY OF LEIF EIRIKSSON'S DISCOVERY OF THE AMERICAS.

The Chicago Athenaeum Museum has commissioned a new work of public art for the Museum's International Sculpture Park in Schaumburg entitled "Vinland", by the noted Norwegian artist, Jarle Rosseland.

The new $200,ooo sculpture, which is scheduled for installation and dedication on May 29, 1999 in Schaumburg, Illinois, commemorates the 1,000- years anniversary of the Viking explorer, Leif Eiriksson and his discovery of the Americas in the year 1001 AD. This anniversary will be celebrated in 1999-2000 by the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland, as well as the North American countries of Canada and the United States. The celebration will be marked by exhibitions on the Vikings and by re-enactment of the historic voyage of Leif Eiriksson in replica Viking ships venturing back and forth between the United States and Norway during 1999-2000.

The sculpture is funded in part by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo; the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York and Chicago; the Norsemen's Federation in Oslo; the State of Illinois; and the Village of Schaumburg. Additional funds for transportation were given by the Norwegian municipality of Karmøy and shipping companies Knutsen OAS and Solstad.

According to the legend, Leif Eiriksson sailed from Greenland to what is now Canada as the first European explorer to discover the Americas or what he called "Vinland", named after wild grapes the Vikings found when they first set foot on American soil. The discovery had always been a part of myth until Norwegian captain Magnus Andersen sailed a replica Viking ship from Bergen, Norway to Chicago in 1893 during the World's Columbian Exposition. That voyage, for the first time, proved that Leif Eiriksson could have, in fact, made the voyage across the Atlantic and in ships commonly used by the Vikings at the turn of the first millennium.

Mr. Rosseland's sculpture, "Vinland", reminisces the Viking spirit of daring and adventure and also symbolically connect North America to the Northern Scandinavian countries during this celebration of Leif Eiriksson's 1,000- years anniversary.

The sculpture takes the form of a ship - 18 giant stones in varying heights, from 6 to 15 feet, arranged in the 65 - foot outline of a Viking ship. The sculpture immediately recalls England's Stonehenge and will spiritually convey the primitive strength and clarity of those early monuments. According to Mr. Rosseland, "Around the year 1000 AD, it was a Norse custom to bury the dead in boats or build tombs by erecting stones alluding to the form of a ship. The ship form stands as a symbol for the idea of death as a voyage into the unknown. The Norse buried their dead with a good supply of food and drink, horses and dogs, and both useful and decorative objects to accompany the Vikings on their final journey."

The stone for "Vinland" was quarried from Karmøy - the center of oil production in western Norway. Copper quarried from Karmøy was used in the creation of the famous Statue of Liberty - one of America's most treasured monuments.

"Vinland", in a sense, becomes a gigantic time piece, measuring the sun's angle and height over the horizon. The orientation of the sculpture points north toward Karmøy, Norway and measures time six hours behind Greenwich time. Inscriptions on the sculpture give accurate measurements of the planets in the years 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000. The University of Oslo has assisted the artist in determining exact measurements and the precision of the planetary movements and positions.

"I visualize the sculpture", continues Mr. Rosseland, "placed in The Chicago Athenaeum's Sculpture Park where people can find solitude to reflect on their own mental voyages of the spirit. The mighty rocks, their perfect setting of a voyage, the reflections of light and shades through dawn, daylight, dusk and night, and through altering weather, are meant to inspire the spectator to partake in his or her own private voyage through time."

Other inscriptions carved on "Vinland" come from Norse folklore and Viking navigation art traditions and are highlighted in gold leaf.

The sculpture will be a major work of contemporary art given to the people of Chicago and Chicago's Northwest suburbs and enjoyed by thousands of visitors at the Sculpture Park in Schaumburg states Chicago Athenaeum Museum officials.

Jarle Rosseland is one of Norway's most accomplished artists, painters, and sculptors. His prints, paintings, and tapestries are found in private and public contemporary collections throughout Norway. He is also celebrated in Europe with frequent museum exhibitions in France, Germany, and Scandinavia. His works have been shown in 16 museums in Canada and the United States. Plans are to install a retrospective of Mr. Rosseland's paintings, prints, and tapestries, including a rare collection of prints entitled, "Vinland Suite," that documents the Viking discoveries, at The Chicago Athenaeum at Schaumburg during the time his "Vinland" sculpture is installed at the Museum's International Sculpture Park in Schaumburg in May.

The Chicago Athenaeum maintains its International Sculpture Park in Schaumburg, Illinois. The 20- acre sits is beautifully landscaped and is open to the public and contains works of art by prominent artists from Japan, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, and the United States. The Park is located adjacent to the Village of Schaumburg's Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center on Schaumburg Road at Summit Drive. The Chicago Athenaeum opened its first extension. Museum Building I on Schaumburg's new Town Square, on December 12, 1998.
